Business School

Onehunga High Business School offers Business education from Years 9 – 13. The founding purpose of OHBS was to:

“…position Onehunga High School as the business secondary school, and the model adopted by other schools, and/or Government, to assist in putting New Zealand at the forefront of entrepreneurial and business education”

The vision is “Excellence in entrepreneurship and business education.”

The Approach is

  • Curriculum and student activities that exceed curriculum standards in terms of:

o   Experiential learning

o   Cross-disciplinary thinking and integration with other subjects

o   Engagement with industry. The level of engagement with business and business people

o   The level of engagement with tertiary providers (particularly business schools)

  • Focus on the development of an entrepreneurial mindset to prepare students to be “life ready” for tertiary education, work and industry contexts of complexity, ambiguity and change.
  • Improve career readiness and ensure development of key professional competencies, including leading with confidence, communication skills, problem solving and creativity and financial literacy.
  • For students wishing to pursue tertiary studies in business, all New Zealand universities and polytechnics offer a full range of commerce related subjects. Studying Business Studies at High school is a good pre-tertiary course for students looking to major in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, and Operations Management.

The Business School was the first of its kind in New Zealand. The School benefits from the ongoing professional support of a number of business people, and has well developed networks in the local community, as well as nationally and internationally.
