Pastoral Care

Onehunga High School has accepted international students for many years and we know the importance of caring for our international students. Our New Zealand student body enjoys the friendships made with international students and we have had a number of New Zealand students return with the international student to their home country.

The New Zealand Ministry of Education has developed the “Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.” Onehunga High School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code. Copies of the Code are available from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz

All International students are also able to access the various Student Support services avaiable to all students at the school.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

When you first arrive at Onehunga High School you are referred to the ESOL Department for English assessment.

The ESOL department is staffed by qualified English Language teachers. The department has a range of resources to help you with English language and with other subjects in the curriculum. They also provide support for classroom teachers who have ESOL students in their classes.

At junior level there are ESOL option classes available. At years 11, 12 & 13 there are special timetabled programmes to help ESOL students. Entry to many subjects at senior level depends on your English language experience and ability. You will continue to get help from the ESOL department in your subject classes.
